How often do people switch careers?

It is not difficult to see that work history can be very different over the course a person’s life. A survey done by the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that people born between 1957-1964 change their jobs an average of 5.7x between 18-24 years old, and two to four times between 25-34 years of age. This number drops to 2.9 changes between the ages of 35 and 44, and 1.9 changes between 45 and 52. This trend does not necessarily mean that career changes are inevitable, since the changes might not be constant.

Gen Z

One of the most important traits of Gen Z workers is their willingness to change career direction if it serves their best interests. In fact, 44 per cent of Gen Zers would rather not be employed than have a job that interests them. Both Gen Z employees and employers can benefit from these traits.

A recent survey found that nearly 80 per cent of Gen Z professionals would think about a total career shift, regardless of whether they were in a different field or in a different function. Half of these GenZ professionals would also consider moving to another location to take up their new roles. A further 20% of Gen Z workers stated that they would consider a job that offers more variety.

Millennials

Some people are happy to stay in the same job their whole lives. Others will switch between jobs and find the right one. There are many reasons why someone might change their career. Here are a few examples: millennials; baby boomers; and the general populace. Most people don't want to be stuck in the same position for their entire lifetime.


Many people switch careers to find work that is more satisfying and fulfilling. People look for jobs in healthcare, education and the environment. Others may want to change careers in order to make more money. According to a survey by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average worker changes jobs five to seven times throughout their lifetime, and this number is expected to continue to rise in the coming decades. Moreover, a changing economy is making career changes more likely. People are working longer hours and part-time.

Gen X

The next generation will enter the workforce within the next few years and they have different expectations about their jobs. Compared to previous generations, millennials and Gen Z workers will stay in a job for only about three years on average. The reason for this shift is based on their generational identity and the stage in their lives. This will lead them to seek more flexibility in job search, higher pay, and better benefits. They aren't likely change their careers as fast as their Gen X counterparts.

Gen Xers prefer to know what their goals and objectives are when they start a job. This helps them stay focused. For example, they may ask multiple question to collect project requirements. Once this information is gathered, they will create their plan for the project. They may also offer general guidance to team members as needed.

Baby boomers

Many baby boomers are looking for a new job. They are an educated, independent generation. Many of them were raised in times of reform and challenge the status quo. They don’t fear conflict and will challenge all accepted practices. They are focused on their career and have a clear goal.

The career opportunities available to baby boomers are numerous. They know what they love and what kind of contributions they desire to make. Change of career is a great way to discover new interests, broaden their skills, and gain a fresh perspective. Additionally, career change gives them time to explore different industries, different locations and different job functions.
