Preparing your Job Search Plan

career advice for young women

Many resumes are useful when you're preparing for your job hunt. Perhaps you are changing sectors and have made two separate resumes. These resumes can be organized by sector to help you in your search. You can also use resumes created for your previous sector to help you create your current resume. You should also update your resumes regularly, especially if you change sectors often.

Plan a realistic, relevant job search strategy

Before starting your job search, make a detailed, realistic plan. Begin by creating a list containing five companies you are interested. Research the company's financial health and culture. Compare it to its competition. Also, write down your skills and experience. After you have your list, spend an hour looking through it. Secondly, determine what kind of role and company you'd like to apply for.

Be realistic about your goals. It is not a good idea to set unrealistic goals and aim for impossible things. It is impossible to expect to become a CEO if you have just graduated from college. The same goes for changing careers. You cannot expect to raise your compensation package. Be realistic about your job search and be consistent in how you approach it. Remember that the goal of your job search is to find the right job. Not the first position you discover.

Create a timeline to help you plan your job search

It's important to set a timeframe when you begin preparing for a job search. While you may assume that you'll start looking for a job in the fall, you should start planning your search one year ahead of time. This will give you plenty of time for references to be gathered, a letter from an advisor prepared, and letters of recommendation. If you want to find a new job, start networking in the summer.

Then, divide the tasks into daily and week-end tasks. Also, set deadlines. It will keep you on track and focused if you create deadlines. Whether you have five months, a year, or even a year, a timetable will help you stay organized and get the job done.
