There are several age-proofing techniques that older workers can employ to improve their job search. Project-based employment is one example. This can be used to highlight your skills and experiences. You can also age-proof your life by being tech-savvy, and understanding your online presence. You can find more advice in our job search checklists for baby boomers.

The most effective strategy is project-based work

Senior workers have the option of project-based jobs. Employers are often looking for individuals who can work in temporary positions. This type is great for older workers as it fills in the gaps on their CVs and shows potential employers their capabilities. These jobs are offered by many companies and often require less work than a full time position. These projects don't require benefits, and they can be terminated with little or no notice.

Older workers are able to use skills and experience they don't have that younger workers lack, regardless of their age. During the recession, companies often promoted younger employees into management roles because they were cheaper to hire. This caused high turnover and hurt office morale.

Focus on your strengths and change the conversation to focus on your age

You can reframe the conversation to include your age and highlight your skills and abilities if you are an older worker. In the workplace, age discrimination is a big problem. People often judge books by what they look like. Your age doesn't mean you have to hide your accomplishments. Highlighting your past achievements and strengths can help you stand out from the rest of the candidates.

When job hunting, many older workers face discrimination based on their age. The average American has more than ten jobs over their lifetime, and age discrimination can be particularly difficult for older workers. In a recent survey, AARP found that three out of five older workers had experienced age discrimination in the workplace. Twenty-five percent of the older members of the team had received negative comments from their co-workers due to their age. Although age discrimination is illegal in the United States, many recruiters struggle with unconscious biases that are age-related.

After interview, thank you!

Remember to thank interviewers with a thankyou note. Do not use a cutesy signature, or mimic the signatures of others. It is important not to copy and paste the exact same words for every interview.

The thank-you note must be precise, but not too specific. It should convey gratitude and excitement about the opportunity. It should also highlight your qualifications for the position.

Keeping your spirits high during extended job searches

For your well-being, it is important to stay positive during job searches. It's easy not to be positive when things aren’t going your way. You have to send out dozens upon dozens of resumes. Yet, you don't get much feedback. Some companies even ghost you.

Fortunately, there are many resources available to help older workers stay positive during their extended job search. The AARP offers numerous resources, including audio recordings and presentations. It offers advice and tips on how to do a successful job hunt. Encore Boston Network was also created by the organization to inform employers about the advantages of hiring older workers. The program's goal is to raise awareness about the value of experienced workers and commit to equal opportunity for all employees regardless of age. More than 1000 companies have adopted this initiative, from a range of industries.
